Wireless network (WLAN / Wi-Fi) on Mac OS X 10.6.x (Snow Leopard)Connecting to the JYU wireless network (jyu-student & jyu-staff) and to eduroam on OS X 10.6.x (Snow Leopard)https://www.jyu.fi/digipalvelut/en/guides/wlan-and-vpn/wlan-settings-for-mac/wlan-settings-for-macos-10.6.xhttps://www.jyu.fi/digipalvelut/@@site-logo/logo.png
Connecting to the JYU wireless network (jyu-student & jyu-staff) and to eduroam on OS X 10.6.x (Snow Leopard)

With your JYU user account you can access three wireless networks:

  • jyu-student is for students at the JYU campus area
  • jyu-staff is for staff at the JYU campus area
  • eduroamcan be used by students and staff on JYU campus as well as around the world on the campuses of many different academic institutions. More information about eduroam can be found here.

Note! Within JYU campus area please primarily use either jyu-student or jyu-staff networks!

jyu-student and jyu-staff networks require a few settings to be set before they can be connected to. It is essential to select TTLS - PAP as the authentication method. The wireless network can then be used with your JYU username and password.

eduroam works almost the same. The only difference is that when connecting to eduroam, you will need to type your username as username@jyu.fi (e.g. mameikal@jyu.fi)

Detailed settings for accessing the WLAN

Choose the subnet jyu-staff if your status is University staff and jyu-student if your status is University student.
The subnet jyu-guest is for visitors at the University.

Continue by clicking Advanced... You'll come to the next window.

You may see networks that you have previously visited, as with jyu-staff in the example. If you have several networks
you may drag them into a preferred order. Click the tab 802.1X for the next window.

Select the security type WPA Enterprise. It seems to be more reliable than WPA2 Enterprise.
Choose any name for your profile (in the example my-jyu is used), and your user name is the user account at the University.
Select the other options as in the example and click the Configure button.
Choose PAP from the TTLS Inner Authentication drop-down menu as on the example above.

Choose Apply and then close all windows.
The status should read Connected and the IP address should be of the form '130.234.*.*'.
If there is a problem, then the IP address will be of the form '169.*.*.*' and you are not connected to the internet.

Problems and solutions while logging in to the wireless network

Sometimes there seem to be connection problems, particularly the first time connecting to the network, even though everything seems to be correct. If there is a problem and you are not properly connected, the IP address will be of the form '169.*.*.*' and there will be no connection to the internet. If you have any problems logging in, change the security option to WPA Enterprise, if you previously had WPA2 Enterprise.
